2022 Skinny Tire Festival Recap
What an amazing event the 2022 Skinny Tire Festival in Moab, Utah was! The sun shined on us all 4 days, and while the morning temperatures had us eager for the climbs to generate some heat, we were rewarded in the afternoon’s wild mild temperatures and ample sunshine to linger in the lawn of the Aarchway Inn and discuss triumphs both on and off the routes. We wanted to take a moment to pass out some thank you’s and highlight some achievements.
#1 Thank You To Our Amazing Team!
We had over 35 people dedicate 4-days to providing amazing customer service and support to our cyclists. From setting up aid stations to prepping snacks, to driving the SAG vehicles, to operating and communicating with radios - those who dedicate their time to Skinny Tire Events are top-notch folks, and we simply couldn’t do it without you. Our sincerest and most heart-felt gratitude to each and every one of you.
#2 THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING CYCLISTS!
We had over 500 cyclists attend the event from across 40 states and two countries! The ages ranged from 83 years young to 19 years old! We had speed champion cyclists, cycling clubs, recreational cyclists, and those relatively new to distance cycling. Some were here to conquer a goal, some were celebrating a health victory, some were here to cross off the bucket list, some were honoring lost loved ones, and some were attending for the 15th time. And everyone single participant had one thing in common - They all provided community and comradery which for us, is what hosting the Skinny Tire Festival is all about. We have so much gratitude for every one of you who chose to share your 4 (or 2!) days with us.
#3 PHOTOS SUBMITTED BY PARTICIPANTS
We had over 1,200 (1,200!!) photos submitted in our annual photo content by participants! And the photos were amazing! The photo contest winners are selected through a random electronic draw, and we wanted to congratulate Barbara D and Kris R for winning free entry to the 2023 Skinny Tire Festival!
While the winners were selected randomly, we did receive an amazing array of photos from our participants - You all have skills with those iPhone while on route! They were so good, we wanted to share (in no particular order) around 100 photos that we thought captured the event spirit. We’ll also share more of these photos throughout the year on social media (this same album will be on our Facebook page as well.). Scroll to the bottom of this post to view the gallery.
#4 Raffle WINNERS
Congratulations to Rick Dunham (from Moab) for winning the Harley Davidson road bike and congratulations to Denise Mueller (from California) for winning the yellow tandem bike!
A couple of fun facts about Denise:
In 2018 she became the fastest human to ride a bicycle over open ground, being clocked at 183.932 mph. No, we aren’t kidding! Read all about it at this NPR article profiling her amazing achievement. You might of seen their vehicle at our event, highlighting Project Speed.
Denise is also a volunteer with Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering lives through sport. And it just so happens, this tandem bike may be used to help those who are blind, cycle. So cool.

#6 RIDING FOR A CAUSE
As you may know, Mark founded Skinny Tire Events over 20 years ago, after Mark’s brother, Duane, passed away of cancer. He put purpose to his cycling and has continued to raise spirits, awareness, and community for those battling (or supporting those battling) cancer. We are humbled and proud to report we will be making donations to our local cancer treatment center that total over $12,000. All generated from registration fees and additional donations by participants. If you’d like to add to that amount, you can do so by clicking here, and choose “Moab Regional Hospital” when asked where to direct your gift.
