Fundraising Tips Print E-mail

You really can make fundraising fun! It’s a great way to let people know what you’re doing and who you’re helping. Invite others to share your success. Here are a few tips that will help. Start simple and watch your fundraising take on a life of its own. If asking for donations is difficult for you, than maybe selling products will work better. Or you could try hosting a special event. For those very short on time, letter writing and corporate matching will be effective for you. Be creative and find your niche. Always remember to refer to the most effective tool you have....YOU! Plan your strategy and start early.

SAMPLE LETTER

Two samples follow. Thanks to Pete Caparelli for letting us borrow his “short and sweet” style and to Colette Johnston for offering her “tell your story” style. Both work and are very effective.

Hello, As you know, I like to bike. This year I'm putting purpose to my cycling by participating in the Moab Skinny Tire Festival.  This event donates 100% of funds raised to cancer survivorship and research programs....some in our own backyard.   Whatever you can contribute will be a big help. Thank you. Pete

Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues,

For some of you it’s been a long time. I want to start by saying thanks to all of you for the love and support you gave us when we lost Dwayne. He is missed everyday but Jan and the girls and all the rest of us are adjusting. Having so many wonderful expressions of love and friendship has been more comforting than you will ever know, so again a heartfelt thanks to all of you.

Well this letter is full of firsts and things I thought would never come from me. I truly never thought I would be sending my fiends a true blue solicitation letter. (Keep reading.) And I never thought I would be training to do a 100 mile bike ride! But I am.

When I was led to the Moab Skinny Tire Festival, I knew it was the perfect fit. I promised Dwayne I would continue to ride and more importantly to raise money for cancer research and survivorship. So there-in lies the reason for this letter. You guessed it I’m looking for sponsors again. (I promise you’ll only hear from me twice a year.) So for any of you that feel you can, I in Dwayne’s name, would greatly appreciate any donation............$5.00 to $5000.00

I am riding in Dwayne’s honor but will gladly ride in the names of others friends and family members on the donors behalf. All you have to do is give money, of course.

I know that everyone has their “cause” and if we donated to every one that came along we would all be broke. I’m just asking that you consider how important it is that we find a cure and end to cancer. At current one in three of us will be directly impacted by cancer unless we stop it. Dwayne always wanted to do anything he could for others suffering from this awful illness. He often was the one cheering up other patients in the chemo treatment rooms. Had he been able, he would have participated in ongoing clinic trials because he wanted to help in any way he could. So I guess this is one way for all of us to do that for him and for ourselves.

Donating is very easy. If you’re internet savvy go to my activegiving.com website [list your site] and donate online. If not you can use the enclosed envelope and form and mail it to me. The only catch is it MUST be received by me no later than February 15.

If you can’t give anything right now, believe me I understand. (Don’t think you’ll get off my mailing list however). Any donation is truly appreciated and no amount is too small. REALLY!!

Well that’s my best pitch. Thanks so much in advance. Take care of yourselves and each other and stay in touch. Much love, Colette.

To write your own letter, sit down with a loved one and narrate your story. Say why and how you find yourself doing what you’re doing. Edit a bit, then send out. Don’t second guess yourself. Move forward with intention.

YOUR LIST

Create a master list of your friends, acquaintances, colleagues, relatives, and neighbors. Think of anyone you might know. Don’t be shy, you’ll find that people will be honored you’ve asked them to be a part of the special project. Most everyone has some reference to cancer and want to feel like they can make a difference.

YOUR FUNDRAISING GOAL

Start early. Give yourself plenty of time. You will do better and enjoy it more if you plan well and have time to reach your goal. We have prizes for people donating $500 on up.

CREATE A SCHEDULE

Just like your training schedule, a fundraising schedule will keep you on top of your deadlines. Email or contact people every two weeks or so to follow up. Be sure to send your last email at least two weeks before YOUR deadline so people are aware of your timeline.

IMPLEMENT IDEAS THAT WORK FOR YOU

Keep your schedule in mind and be realistic about what you can do.

Lots of free time? Host a special event.
Busy, busy? Send email letters to everyone you know

THE COST

You’ll have some small costs such as postage, paper, phone calls and supplies. Think about trying to get some of these donated. Let people know if they donate supplies that you will be sure they are properly acknowledged for their contribution. Then be sure to do it.
