very good "A" route has a backup "B" route.  Historically The Moab Century Tour cyclists choosing the 65 or 100-mile routes traveled over the scenic La Sal Loop road from the south side of Moab dropping into Castle Valley.  This approach earned the nickname "The Big Nasty" due to the 3000 feet elevation gain in 7 miles on the east side of the Loop.  Ouch!  However, the Federal Highway Administration is replacing the bridge over Mill Creek about half way along the Loop Road and traffic at the bridge site is now closed.  So what does that mean for all of us Moab Century Tour riders?
Like all successful adventurers, we created Plan "B", in this case, heading out and returning from the north side of Moab, This approach joins the 45 milers to ride on Highway 128, the beautiful, winding river road familiar to us during the Skinny Tire Festival. At the Castle Valley turn off, the 65 and 100 mile riders will turn into the redrock desert riding along the sandstone pillars up the east side of the La Sal mountains to the Castle Valley Overlook. This will be the turn around point.  Reaching 8,300 feet, the alpine heights and views don't get much better than this. As you return, those seeking the century mileage will turn right toward Dewey Bridge and log the additional miles. All riders will return via Highway 128.  But don't think you are getting away with an easier ride, the grades might not be as steep but they are long.  As always you will be fully supported by our volunteer staff with food, beverages and experienced mechanics.

What if the bridge gets finished early? Then we move forward with Plan "A" and it is the "Big Nasty" climb for those choosing the 65 and 100-mile routes after all. We will keep you posted as we learn more.
